What is choline?

Choline is an organic compound once classified as a B vitamin and referred to as vitamin B4. Nowadays, there is a move away from classifying choline as a vitamin, since the body is able to synthesize the compound on its own. The health consequences of choline deficiency in the body have not yet been defined. However, too low levels of this compound are known to occur in people with blood lipid disorders, liver steatosis or cognitive impairment.

The body uses choline to synthesize phospholipids, which build cell membranes. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine is also synthesized from this compound. Choline supports the functioning of the nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular systems. The product may also be available as Alpha GPC and CDP-choline.

Uses of choline

Choline is used to support the functioning of the nervous system. Improves learning processes, improves concentration, reduces memory problems. In addition, the product nullifies mood swings.

Low levels of choline in the body are found in Alzheimer’s patients, so levels of this compound can be supplemented with supplements.

Choline can protect the liver from steatosis , in addition, it improves detoxification processes and stimulates bile secretion. As a compound that increases the level of carnitine in the body, choline increases physical performance. The product can also be used to support the cardiovascular system, primarily by normalizing blood pressure and maintaining a normal blood lipid profile.

Mechanism of action

Choline can cross the blood-brain barrier and can therefore benefit brain function. As a component of phosphocholine, a compound that builds nerve cell membranes, it helps the development of the nervous system. In addition, it is responsible for maintaining the integrity of nerve cells and efficient nerve conduction. When choline is attached to the acetic acid residue, acetylcholine is formed – a neurotransmitter that supports the processes of learning, memory and concentration.

Choline – dosage

The recommended dosage of choline is 425 mg for women and 550 mg for men. The formula will be better absorbed when taken together with inositol, vitamin A and vitamin B12. In contrast, enhancement of cholinergic system activation is favored by the combined use of Noopept or piracetam.
