What is l-dopa?

L-dopa ((2S)-2-amino-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid) is a natural amino acid synthesized in the human body . Other names for this compound include levodopa, L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine. This compound is synthesized from another amino acid – l-tyrosine. The role of levodopa in the body is to participate in the synthesis of dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine, compounds with an activating effect. Thanks to this effect, l-dopa is included in the group of nootropic compounds, just like Bromantan or Modafinil.

The use of l-dopa

People whose dopamine levels may be too low can reach for l-dopa. Such suspicion is raised by the following symptoms: fatigue and apathy, decreased motivation, increased nervous tension, anxiety and depression. People affected by Parkinson’s disease also show an increased need for dopamine. Taking l-dopa is a much more effective solution than taking dopamine, as it is absorbed by the body at a very low rate.

Levodopa has a positive effect on cognitive function, improves memory and concentration, in addition to raising motivation levels. It increases alertness during the day, while – improving the quality of sleep at night. L-dopa contributes to a temporary increase in growth hormone levels and affects the elevation of the luteinizing hormone LH. In addition, the product can help treat anxiety.

By increasing dopamine levels, l-dopa can favorably affect testosterone levels and libido. Giving young men a single dose of 300 mg of levodopa 90 minutes before sexual intercourse helped improve responsiveness to sexual stimuli. On the other hand, men in older age groups can get the effect of more frequent and longer erections.

Mechanism of action of l-dopa

L-dopa is an essential amino acid in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It passes through the blood-brain barrier and To enhance this effect, l-dopa can be combined with theanine, EGCG or rhodiola rosea. In addition, l-dopa is an intermediate metabolite in the synthesis of norepinephrine and epinephrine.

L-dopa – dosage

The standard dose of l-dopa is 150-500 mg per day. In order to experience the maximum benefits of taking levodopa, it is important to remember to take it regularly. An ad hoc product taken on an ad hoc basis will not work as effectively as during permanent supplementation.
