Description
The ANTI-RAD unit is a packaged preparation whose active salt is potassium iodide. Two layers of information have to be kept apart at all times: the constants of the salt, which never change, and the declared content of the finished unit, which is set by the supplier specification and printed on the packaging. The protocol below is written for a laboratory that receives such units and must keep them traceable from delivery to disposal.
Identity of the active salt
Potassium iodide is an ionic solid with the formula KI, CAS number 7681-11-0 and a molar mass of 166.00 g/mol. It is a simple alkali metal halide with no stereochemistry to declare and no isomer to confuse it with. The single reactive feature is the iodide anion, which is readily oxidised, and that one property explains almost every rule that follows. Intake, control and storage protocol
- Log the delivery: supplier, lot marking, packaging integrity and the content per unit exactly as declared by the manufacturer, without recalculating it.
- Match the packaging text against the accompanying document; a declared quantity per unit is a specification item and cannot be inferred from the molar mass of the salt.
- Inspect the material. A white to faintly off-white solid is what the specification implies; any yellow or brown cast indicates liberated iodine and belongs in the batch record before use.
- Store closed, dry and shielded from light, physically separated from oxidising agents and from acids.
- Transfer working quantities into a labelled secondary container instead of opening the primary packaging repeatedly.
- Record each withdrawal with date, mass or unit count and operator, so the remaining quantity can be reconstructed without reweighing.
- Withdraw the unit at the expiry marking given by the supplier and document the disposal route together with the batch record.
Steps three and four are the pair that tends to fail together. Iodide exposed to air, light and traces of acid slowly gives iodine, and the resulting tint is the earliest visible signal that storage conditions have slipped. Catching it at inspection is cheap; catching it in the middle of a determination is not.
The same chemistry explains why this salt is a classical analytical reagent. Iodine formed in solution binds a further iodide ion as triiodide, and triiodide with starch produces the intense blue-black complex that underpins the starch test. Yellowing during storage is that reaction proceeding where nobody wanted it.
Keep the certificate, the packaging text and the withdrawal log together. The molar mass and the registry number are fixed reference data, while the content per unit, the expiry marking and the packaging format belong to the individual delivery and only current documentation settles them.
